Getting Started Session Planning

Session Planning and Visual Drill Builder

Build a youth soccer practice timeline, create visual drills, save coaching notes, and prepare a printable session handout in Pitch Planner.

Use Session Planning to turn a coaching objective into a practice you can run from your phone or tablet. A session can combine activities from the drill library with your own activities, timed blocks, coaching notes, and reusable visual diagrams.

Plan a practice session

  1. Open Session Planning from the app.
  2. Create a new session and enter the date, team format, age group, and level when those fields are available.
  3. Add activities from the drill library or create an activity of your own.
  4. Set the duration for each block and reorder the activities until the session flows from arrival or warm-up into the main topic and a game.
  5. Add a coaching note that names the behavior you want to see. For example, for a U10 7v7 team working on width, write “wide player checks away before receiving.”
  6. Save the session, then print or download the plan when you need a field-side handout.

If the session is too long for the available field time, shorten the least important block first. If players understand the activity but do not show the behavior in the final game, keep the objective and change the constraint or space in the next session.

Build a visual drill

Open Visual Drill Builder from the drill library or a session activity. Then:

  1. Choose the field template that matches the activity, such as a full field, half field, penalty area, or grid.
  2. Add player markers, goals, cones, equipment, labels, zones, and movement lines.
  3. Select an item to move or resize it. On an iPad or another touch device, the builder uses a split layout and provides smaller and larger controls for the selected item.
  4. Save the drill with a name and coaching note so another coach can understand the organization and objective.

If a diagram is hard to read at a glance, remove decorative objects before adding more detail. Keep the player starting positions, the movement cue, and the decision you want players to practice as the visual priorities.

Use the plan on match day

Practice notes and match observations work better together when they lead to a specific next action:

  • If a player consistently makes the decision in the activity but not in the match, keep the skill and change the practice pressure or space.
  • If the player does not show it in either setting, simplify the activity and give one clear cue before adding defenders or speed.

Use Lineups & Formations to carry a practice position idea into a match lineup. Use Attendance Tracking when you need to see who was present for the session.

Open Session Planning

Open the Session Planning tool to start a practice plan. The soccer session planner overview explains how the planner and drill builder fit into the wider Pitch Planner workflow.

NEXT STEP FOR PRACTICE

Put the next session on the field.

Turn the coaching idea into a usable session plan, then keep the player decision you want to see close to the activity.
