Lineups & Formations
Create, save, reuse, and adjust youth soccer lineups in Pitch Planner with formation diagrams for 4v4, 5v5, 7v7, 8v8, 9v9, and 11v11.
Lineups let you pre-plan your starting players and formation so match setup is faster on game day. Try the public soccer lineup maker first, then save the finished lineup in Pitch Planner when you are ready to use your own roster.
Create a Lineup
- Open your team and tap Lineups
- Tap New Lineup
- Enter a Lineup Name and optionally choose a formation
- Tap Create
- In the lineup editor, choose a formation if one is not already selected
- Tap slots on the pitch diagram, then tap players from the roster to assign them
- Use the saved preferred position shown for a player as a planning reference, then assign the player to the tactical slot you want them to play
- Use 1st Half and 2nd Half if you want different assignments by half
- Tap Save
If your plan is at its saved-lineup limit, New Lineup is disabled and the page shows the current lineup count for that team.
Formations
Each format has preset formations:
- 4v4: 2-2, 1-2-1
- 5v5: 2-2, 1-2-1, 2-1-1, 1-1-2 (includes GK)
- 7v7: 3-2-1, 2-3-1, 3-1-2
- 8v8: 3-3-1, 2-4-1, 3-2-2
- 9v9: 3-3-2, 3-2-3, 4-3-1, 3-4-1
- 11v11: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-4-3
The numbers represent outfield rows from defense to attack. All formats except 4v4 include a goalkeeper automatically.
Preferred positions and tactical slots
These two labels answer different questions:
- Preferred position is the position saved on a player’s roster profile. Use it when deciding where a player is most comfortable or which assignment to consider first.
- Tactical slot is the position assigned in this lineup. It describes where the player is planned to play in this formation, even when it differs from their preferred position.
If a player is on the bench, use their preferred position to help choose an assignment. If they are on the field, use the slot on the pitch as the source of truth for their current role.
Using Lineups on Match Day
When setting up a match, step 1 lets you choose:
- Start Fresh — pick players manually
- Last Match Lineup — reuse the previous game’s lineup
- Saved Lineups — pick from your saved lineups
The formation and player positions carry over so you can get to the field faster.
While a match is live or paused, use the formation control above the field to choose another valid shape for that match format. Pitch Planner keeps the current on-field players in the match and records their new positions. On a touch or pen device, drag a player to reposition them, or tap one player and another slot to swap them.
Tips
- Save a lineup after a match using the Save as Lineup button on the summary page
- Set a default lineup so it appears first in the list
- Duplicate a lineup to create variations without starting from scratch
NEXT STEP FOR LINEUPS
